Mr. Sherlock Holmes and I met the next day as he had arranged, and inspected the rooms at No. 221B, Baker Street, of which he had spoken at our meeting at St. Bart’s. They consisted of a couple of comfortable bedrooms, about equal in size, with one facing the street and the other facing the back of the building where grew a handsome plane tree; an updated bathing room with water laid in and a gas water heater; and a single large airy sitting-room, cheerfully furnished, and illuminated by two broad windows also facing Baker Street.

 

It was, altogether, a far cry from my cramped, comfortless private hotel on the Strand, surrounded by music halls and theaters and noisy taverns. Moreover, the rent, when halved by Mr. Holmes’ contribution, was surprisingly more affordable than my present domicile.

 

I had so few personal belongings that it was quite easy, even invalided as I was, to have everything boxed up and moved round to Baker Street, save the few things I wished to have for the morrow. Before I fell asleep, I reflected how soul-glad and relieved I was to say good-bye to this dark, meaningless period of my life and that this was the last night I would ever spend staring at these walls and this ceiling from this narrow, uncomfortable bed.

A/N: You guys, I can't believe this is my last entry in the last Watson's Woes July Writing Challenge. I'm literally tearing up writing this. It's been a fantastic time, even the years when I couldn't/didn't participate. I'll miss it, but who knows -- maybe, like Watson moving in with Sherlock Holmes to 221B, it's actually the start of something else fantastic.
